A tournament is a competition in which a relatively large number of participants take part. In the field of sports, a tournament varies from the school level to the international level.

 As we know a tournament is a competition where a lot of participants participate actively in a systematic way.

Objectives of the tournaments-

Skill Development- 

For the skill development of a player tournaments play an important role. A player can develop his skill and technique of a particular skill during the tournament.

Publicity of Sports-

Tournaments play an important role in popular games. During any tournament many people enjoy it and someone is attracted to that game and starts to play himself as a player. People know about the games through tournaments like IPL- for cricket many people watch and play cricket daily after the popularity of cricket. To promote Kabaddi in Our Country the Pro Kabaddi League.

Player Selection-

Tournaments are beneficial to select players for next-level tournaments. In any tournament, a player performs his best skillful game which the selector attracts to select him for the next higher-level tournaments.

Develop National Pride and Integration-

Tournaments can help to develop National Pride among the people belonging to different regions. Tournaments give the opportunity to prove themselves at an international level to famous worldwide, which helps to make pride for our country.

Social Development-

Tournaments help to develop social values in the players.  Values such as fair play, brotherhood, etc.

Tournaments get the opportunity to tour different places and relax at the time of games.

Types of Tournaments-

  1. Knockout Tournament
  2. League Tournament
  3. Combination Tournament
  4. Challenge Tournament

Knockout Tournament-

Also known as an elimination tournament or sudden-death tournament, participants compete in a series of matches or games. As you lose the tournament, you must leave the tournament.
League Tournament- It is also known as a round-robin tournament. In this, each participant plays against every other participant in a league-style format. Points are awarded, and the participant with the most points wins.

Combination Tournament-

A combination tournament is a tournament with at least two types of playing patterns. It is a combination of Knock-out tournaments and league tournaments. The tournament can be played in two parts, since the first rounds of the tournament can be played on one basis, while the last rounds can be played on another basis. It has 4 combinations:

  1. Knock-out cum league tournament
  2. League cum knock-out tournament
  3. knock-out cum knock-out tournament
  4. League cum league tournament

Challenge tournament-

A challenge is a request to the holder of a league title for a match between champion and challenger, the winner of which will acquire or retain the title. In some cases the champion has the right to refuse a challenge; in other cases, it results in forfeiture of the title.There is different methods of tournament:

  1. Pyramid method
  2. Ladder method
  3. Web method

Consolation tournament-

In a knockout tournament, a player or team may be accidentally disqualified and no longer allowed to participate. Consolation tournaments are proposed as a solution to this problem. A defeated team’s willingness to play again to prove their worth and earn a secondary prize is called “consolation.” This tournament is superior to a single knockout tournament because it allows for more matches.

Importance of tournament-

  1. Tournaments for the development of sporting skills help develop a variety of sporting talents.
  2. As it goes on player selection, this is quite handy. The performances of good players during the competition can be easily identified.
  3. The integration of national and international levels progressed. It generates a feeling of unity in brotherhood and at the same time promotes national and global unity.
  4. Development of social qualities: Tournament participants bring love, unity, professionalism, understanding, patience, and other social attributes to the stand.
